It is the beginning of spring allergy season in Atlanta and we are already experiencing record high pollen counts. Even if you don’t have serious allergies you may be experiencing the characteristic sore throat, itchy eyes, irritability and achiness that are signs of the ongoing attack on our immune function. There are some simple things that we can do to manage our health during the upcoming onslaught.
Manage your exposure: This is the season when we want to be outside as much as possible. If you are sensitive, you may want to wear a filtration mask to protect yourself from inhalation of pollen. After you have been outside, shower off and be sure to wash your hair after being outside for extended periods. If you don’t wash your hair before bed, be sure to change your pillowcase frequently as it can collect pollen.
Reduce dust: Dust and/or vacuum your house regularly to reduce the amount of dust and infiltrating pollen. Rinse off the outside of your car regularly. Dust your work area regularly.
Drink herbal tea to support your immune function: Tea made from astragalus, gouji berry and honeysuckle can help bolster your immune system during this time of potential over activity.
Use Loquat Syrup if you are experiencing sore throat. Loquat is a fruit, which, combined with honey, has the function of soothing the throat. It is available at most Chinese markets.
Practice Qi Gong. In particular, Tai Chi Qi Gong 18 Movements Part 1 is excellent for supporting and balancing immune function.
Drink lots of water. Keep flushing your system to support the elimination of allergens from your system.
