The Hua Hu Ching, sometimes translated as Educating the Barbarian is reputed to be a distillation of a series of Lao Zi’s oral teachings. They present the concepts of the Daoist path in an easily understood manner that doesn’t require specialized knowledge of internal alchemy or the symbolism that is used in many traditional Daoist teachings. In this Illustrated Introduction to the Hua Hu Ching, I have primarily used Brian Brown Walker’s beautifully poetic translation of the Hua Hu Ching as my source, but have also gone back to Hua Ching Ni’s translation as needed for further elucidation.
Most of the images are mine, drawn from my five years as a “wandering Daoist,” when I moved between Wu Dang, Colorado, and Georgia studying Daoism and its disciplines. The remainder of the images are from Wikimedia Commons or are by Ken McCray of Jacksonville, Florida.
