Zhang Sanfeng created the first Tai Chi and internal martial arts form – Sanfeng Tai Chi 13 – in the 12th century, in Wu Dang.
The legend goes that he saw a bird and a snake fighting and saw that the snake’s soft style could not be overcome by the bird. Finally, from stillness, the snake lunged and killed the bird. In this he saw that the nature of softness also includes the needle point of hardness. That night Zhang Sanfeng had a dream (a visit from the immortals) in which he was taught the 13 forms.
This class is not suitable for beginners. Traditionally, one would study Qi Gong and/or Wu Shu (internal martial art) for several years before beginning their Tai Chi journey. The expression is: the first 10 years you can say “I’ve been taught a little Tai Chi”; the second 10 years you can say “I’ve learned a little Tai Chi”; the third 10 years “I know a little Tai Chi”.
